Increasing Engagement with Virtual Agents Using Automatic Camera Motion
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a series of algorithms which automatically control camera position in a virtual environment while a user is engaged in a simulated face-to-face dialog with a single virtual agent. The common objective of the algorithms is to increase user engagement with the interaction. In our work, we describe three different automated camera control systems that: (1) control the camera’s position based on topic changes in dialog; (2) use sentiment analysis to control the camera-to-agent distance; and (3) adjust the camera’s depth-offield based on “important” segments of the dialog. Evaluation studies of each method are described. We find that changing camera position based on topic shifts results in significant increases in a self-reported measure of engagement, while the other methods seem to actually decrease user engagement. Interpretations and ramifications of the results are discussed.

This paper describes computationally and materially inexpensive methods for panoramic video imaging. Digitally combining images from an array of inexpensive video cameras results in a wide-field panoramic camera, from inexpensive off-the-shelfhardware. We present methods that both correct lens distortion and seamlessly merge images into a panoramic video image. Electronically selecting a region...
متن کاملA framework for real-time nonholonomic path planning in huge terrain datasets
When users navigate through a terrain dataset, they typically control the camera directly. However, such control is difficult and often results in rather unsteady camera motions that can easily cause motion sickness, especially in virtual reality. In this paper we describe a new technique for automatic generation of a camera motion path using nonholonomic motion planning techniques. Using our a...
متن کاملMotion Planning for Camera Movements in Virtual Environments
When users navigate through a virtual environment they often directly control the camera. Such direct control is difficult for inexperienced users and results in rather ugly camera motions that easily lead to motion sickness. In this paper we describe a new technique for automatic generation of camera motion using motion planning techniques from robotics. In this approach the user simply specif...
